Wrist & Hand Pain

There are many causes of wrist and hand pain. The wrist joint is a complex joint that allows flexing and extending the hand and also twisting and turning of the hand. The many hand joints allow fine motor control of the hand and fingers. Causes of wrist and hand pain include: bursitis, tendonitis, irritated nerves, carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain syndrome, arthritis, and injuries such as strains and sprains, fracture, stress fracture, dislocation, sports injuries, and overuse injuries.

Wrist and hand injuries (fractures, dislocation)

Wrist and hand fractures or dislocation occur when there is a break or dislocation in one of the many bones that make up the wrist and hand. They occur due to a force suddenly applied to the bones. They can occur from a major trauma such as an auto accident, sports injury or even just a fall from standing. They can be very painful and cause significant swelling and bruising.

Wrist and hand pain and swelling can persist long after the bones or dislocation have healed. Chiropractic care and physical therapy for wrist and hand fractures can alleviate these chronic symptoms by manipulation of the joint, stretching exercises, strengthening exercises, and range of motion exercises. Acupuncture also works to alleviate the pain associated with wrist and hand fractures.

Wrist and hand injuries (strains and sprains)

Sprains of the wrist and hand occur when a force is applied to the wrist and hand that partially tears the ligaments that hold the bones together. Strains occur when the muscles or tendons that move the wrist and hand are partially torn. They can occur from a major trauma such as an auto accident, sports injury or even just a fall from standing. They can be very painful and cause significant swelling and bruising.

Wrist and hand pain and swelling can persist long after the, ligaments and tendons have healed. Chiropractic care and physical therapy for wrist and hand sprains and strains can alleviate these chronic symptoms by manipulation of the joint, stretching exercises, strengthening exercises, and range of motion exercises. Acupuncture also works to alleviate the pain associated with wrist and hand strains and sprains.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed within a narrow passagway in the wrist. Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include pain, numbness and tingling of the first three fingers. There can also be weakness and decreased range of motion. Causes of tarsal tunnel sydrome include anything that puts pressure on the nerve such as injury, swelling, arthritis, overuse form repetitive motion at work or in sports.

Chiropractic care and physical therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome includes joint manipulation, stretching exercises, strengthening exercises, and range of motion exercises. Identification and avoidance of the causes are important in the treatment as well. Acupuncture is also helpful in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.

De Quervain Syndrome

De Quervain syndrome is often called “text thumb” due to repetitive motion of the thumb when using a smartphone. Repetitive motion of the thumb texting or at work or in sports causes a tendonitis of the tendons that move the thumb. The thumb joint is an important and complex joint that allows the thumb to move in many directions with fine motor control.

Symptoms of De Quervain syndrome include pain with range of motion, decrease range of motion, joint stiffness, weakness, inability to grip objects and text.

Chiropractic care and physical therapy for de Quervain’s syndrome… can alleviate these chronic symptoms by manipulation of the joint, stretching exercises, strengthening exercises, and range of motion exercises. Acupuncture also works to alleviate the pain associated with de Quervain’s syndrome.
